Value of routine preoperative tests: a multicentre study in four general hospitals.

چکیده
We have assessed the value of routine preoperative tests in asymptomatic patients and their influence on anaesthetic and surgical decisions. We studied 3131 ASA I and II patients from four general hospitals undergoing elective surgical procedures. A retrospective review of the medical records revealed that 853 (27%) patients had some abnormal test result, of which 465 (15%) were previously unknown and not suspected at the preanaesthetic visit; these comprised 8.6% chest radiographs, 5.6% electrocardiograms and biochemical tests, and 2.9% haematological tests. Perioperative management was altered in only 0.56-0.26% of patients, depending on the particular test. The present study confirms the need for selective and rational ordering of preoperative tests, the basis of which should be the clinical assessment during the preanaesthetic visit.

متن کاملThe correlation between preoperative erythrocyte sedimentation rate and postoperative outcome in adult cardiac surgery
INTRODUCTION Over the past decades, it has been recommended that preoperative assessment mainly relies on history and physical examination rather than unnecessary laboratory tests. In Iranian hospitals, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) has been routinely measured in most of the patients awaiting major surgery, which has in turn exacted heavy costs on the health system. Therefore, the aim of...

To the Editor: Although routine preoperative screening of patients for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) antibodies occurs in many hospitals, the issue remains controversial, especially in low-risk populations.1 A 1-year trial of routine preoperative screening for HIV antibodies was started in October 1991 at King Khalid National Guard Hospital (KKNGH), a 350-bed general hospital in Jeddah, Sa...
متن کاملA Prospective Multicentre Study to Improve Postoperative Pain: Identification of Potentialities and Problems
Many studies still indicate insufficient pain management after surgery, e.g., in patients after small- or medium-size operations. Yet it is still uncertain if postoperative pain based on patient-related outcomes can be improved by implementing guideline-related programmes in a multicentre approach. Adult patients in six hospitals in one German city were included in this prospective study. Data ...
